Child safety standards

We understand our responsibility to keep children and young people (under 18 years of age) safe. We pride ourselves on being a child-safe organisation with zero tolerance for child abuse.
Everyone is responsible for the safety of children and young people. The law requires Aikido Victoria (Aiki-Kai) Inc to put child safe standards in place to protect children and young people.
If you believe a child or young person is in immediate danger, call the police on 000 (triple zero).

How we protect children and young people

We protect children and young people by:

  • promoting their health and wellbeing
  • supporting their best interests
  • developing policies and training to support our people
  • creating environments where all children and young people have a voice and their views are respected

This applies to children and young people with a disability, Aboriginal children and young people, and children and young people from cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

About the child safe standards

The child safe standards aim to ensure that organisations protect children and young people from sexual, physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. They also cover serious neglect of children and young people under the age of 18.

The standards were introduced under the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act (2005). From 1 July 2022, 11 new child safe standards replaced Victoria’s old standards.

The new standards have requirements to:

  • involve families and communities in efforts to keep children and young people safe
  • have a greater focus on the safety of Aboriginal children and young people
  • manage the risk of child abuse in online environments
  • have more clarity on governance, systems and processes

For information about what has changed for the 2022 standards, please see: Overview of the new Child Safe Standards (Commission for Children and Young People).
