As usual for Summer School, here is our very important Dos and Don’ts list. Most of these rules, including having a COVID Safety Plan, are required by Melbourne University Sports as a contractual condition of use for their venue.
Please pay attention to these emails even if you are only attending for part of the school.
Breaking these rules could result in our Summer School being closed down – please take them seriously and help other students who “might not be aware” of the rules.
DOs
1. Adhere to Child Safety Requirements
We continue to require all trainees and spectators to sign the Safeguarding Children and Young People Code of Conduct as a condition of entry.
- If you have signed the Code of Conduct before (including as at the 2025 Summer School), you do not need to sign it again.
- Respect the U18 area of the tatami (mat).
- Understand and follow the “Never Alone Rule”.
For more details, please refer to the previous email about Child Safety Standards and Summer School, linked on our website here.
2. Daily RAT results
Daily RAT testing is required to participate in the School.
You must provide proof of a negative RAT test every day. Extremely limited numbers of RATs are available on site so please do one at home or and take a photo to show the team who will record ‘sighting’ at the door. This includes observers and mat marshals, not just people training on the mat.
3. Log your own attendance on TRAKR every day.
4. Pick up your lanyard early.
Victorians, please pick yours up early on Saturday to save our rego team on Sunday morning. Even better, come help with the mats AND pick up your lanyard on the same day.
5. Weapons
Please BYO weapons where possible. If you have pre-booked weapons, you will be trusted to return weapons to the rego team at the end of the School, or on your last day.
6. During the School
- If your training partner, or any other student suffers an injury, feels unwell, or is unable to continue training for any reason, you must accompany them off the mat and immediately seek the assistance of a mat marshal.
- We all have a duty of care to each other – do not assume someone else will take care of your partner just so you can keep training.
- If someone asks you to get a mat marshal for them (eg: their training partner might be injured in such in a way that they cannot be moved), please do so promptly.
- Bring an extra gi to change into. It gets hot in Summer!
- Store your bags in the upstairs viewing area.
- Only water and/or sport drinks are permitted to be brought and/or consumed in the dojo – food is not permitted even if you are not training.
- Take care of your weapons and other belongings – the dojo is not locked overnight.
- Personal photos outside of training times are permitted but please respect the “no photo/under 18s” zone at all times.
- Follow all instructions from mat marshals and other Summer School volunteers during the event.
DO NOTS
Violations of these rules may result in the event being closed down by Melbourne University.
- Do not post notices or posters around the university. If you have something you wish to be announced, ask at the rego desk or a mat marshal.
- Do not leave your gis in the dojo, change rooms or anywhere around Melbourne Uni. Orphaned gis will be quarantined in rubbish bags – you may be lucky enough to be allowed to retrieve yours.
- Do not take photos unless specifically permitted to. Violation of this rule could result in a Child Safe incident being reported. Refer to our Photography and Digital Media policy for more details.
- Do not wear shoes inside the dojo (indoor or outdoor). Remove your shoes before entering and carry them to the upstairs benches.
- Do not bring and/or consume food inside the dojo even if you are not training.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
